There’s a lot more to do than just sledding now at the spot the South Huntington community flocks to next to the James Kaden Administration Building when it snows! It’s now an all-weather hot spot! At the base of the great sleigh-riding hill on Wheatley Avenue and Dawson Street, you’ll find the entrance to David P. Bennardo Community Park. All the finishing work has been done and the South Huntington School District wants the community to know that the park is open for everyone to enjoy.

Inside the fully fenced in and gated area, there’s a permanent pavilion situated over a concrete base and walkway with several picnic tables where people can gather to take a break, have a meal or a cup of coffee, or just get together and talk! The covered pavilion makes it easy to do that in all kinds of weather, from hot sun to sprinkles to snow!!! Admire the changing colors in autumn, and come the winter, it will make a great place to have the hot chocolate ready when the kids are done sledding down the hill.

And if you’ve been looking for a place to play or learn bocce, this is the spot! Grab a bocce ball set and head over to the park where you’ll find a bocce court and benches.

The park was a gift to Dr. Dave Bennardo from the Board of Education in recognition of his nine years of visionary leadership and dedication as Superintendent of South Huntington when he retired in June of 2021.

“This is a beloved area of the South Huntington School District and the addition of a pavilion and bocce court will provide enjoyment to a greater number of residents,” said Board President Nicholas Ciappetta. “The official dedication of the land as a park will preserve the area for generations to come.”
