The Walt Whitman Wrestling Team hosted the 28th Annual Andrew Peers Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, January 21st, packing out the high school’s North Gym. The day included wrestlers from Eastport South Manor, Sachem North, North Babylon, Commack and Walt Whitman. Whitman saw 15 of its wrestlers reach the podium, five of which stood at the top proudly with their first place trophies. Junior Jayson Savage, Junior Chase Hinson, Sophomore Matt Gervasio, Sophomore Danny Vasquez, and Junior Luis Navarro were all crowned Champions, while our other Whitman athletes placed either in 2nd, 3rd or 4th place. Danny Vasquez also took home the award for the most pins in the shortest amount of time.

The Andrew Peers Memorial Tournament is named in memory of 1988 Walt Whitman graduate Andrew Peers, who was killed in an auto accident in 1994. Andrew was one of Whitman’s most spirited and accomplished athletes in the 1980s. He won All-League honors three times and was All-County in his senior year for wrestling. Andrew was also an accomplished lacrosse attack man, garnering All-League honors.
Sophomore Danny Vasquez won 1st place in his weight class and took home the 'Mario Meringolo Family' Most Pins/Least Time trophy.
