The South Huntington School District's Technology and Elementary STREAM Initiatives Departments were happy to host their 4th Annual Family STREAM Saturday Family Day at Maplewood Intermediate School on Saturday, March 2, 2024. The event is a great opportunity for students K-5 and their families to learn about the integration of Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, The Arts, and Mathematics through engaging hands-on, discovery-based activities.

Because the modern workplace requires a higher level of interdisciplinary collaboration, the benefits of STREAM in education are becoming more apparent. Activities associated with STREAM incorporate critical thinking skills, exposure to various media and platforms, improving students’ emotional intelligence and social skills, and encouraging students’ curiosity. This day is designed to introduce all that STREAM education has to offer to students and their families in a fun-filled way.

Students and their families had the chance to participate in two 60-minute workshops that included activities such as Building with Lego BricQ, Create with 3Doodler Pen, SPIKE Lego, Discover the World of Microscopes, Edible Science Challenge, Visit A Planetarium, and more. The goal of this annual event is to provide a showcase for students to show them what STREAM is all about and engage them in fun activities while promoting collaboration, observation, and problem solving skills.

It was extremely gratifying as teachers led these exciting workshops for students and their families to enjoy. Thank you to all of our teachers and high school helpers for allowing the day to run smoothly. Thank you to Janine D’Elia, Mari Hahn, and the Technology and Elementary STREAM Initiatives Department for organizing this event!

Mrs. Janine D’Elia, Technology Integration Coach at Maplewood, welcomed families to the 4th annual STREAM event.

Stimson Middle School science teacher, Mr. Morrill, had students intrigued as he demonstrated one of our district’s state-of-the-art dissection tables.

Participants in grades K-5 visited the mobile digital planetarium to learn how to identify stars, constellations and the moon phases in our very own night sky.

Participants explored new worlds as they used microscopes to view insects, crystals, leaves, soil, salt, moss and more.

Students in grades 3-5 sparked creative confidence as they used art and design to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math using 3Doodler Pens.

There’s nothing like a fun science experiment that includes eating! Whether it’s with your favorite candy, chemical reactions, or exploring the moon phases, science you can eat is tasty.

An instructor from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) taught students in grades K-5 about airports and flight in the National Airspace System.

When creating with SPIKE Lego, students had the choice to build different amusement park rides where they were able to define a problem, brainstorm solutions, test, code and refine prototypes to improve their ideas.
