Oakwood's 'Soup-er Bowl' Contributes Over 1,000 Cans of Soup to Wildcat Pantry

For two weeks, students at Oakwood were asked to bring in cans of soup as part of their ‘Soup-er Bowl’ fundraiser. The goal was to contribute to the high school’s Wildcat Cares Food Pantry, and they delivered! In early March, second-graders from Oakwood’s student council visited the high school to see just how much they were able to contribute.

The second grade leaders, fondly referred to as Kindness Captains, were excited to visit Walt Whitman and be amongst our district’s oldest students. Oakwood students, along with a few of the elementary school staff members, dropped off multiple boxes of soup cans that were collected from their very successful Soup-er Bowl fundraiser. Principal of Oakwood, Dr. Annie Michaelian, said this was the biggest collection the school has ever done, with over 1,000 cans contributed!

The fundraiser was a collaboration between the student council and Oakwood’s SBM committee. Second grade student council members at Oakwood were asked to bring a can of soup to each of their meetings the week before and after the Super Bowl, and students throughout the building also got involved. With the incentive of a pancake breakfast with the principal, classes competed to bring in as many cans as they could for a good cause – helping the community.

During their visit to the high school, Whitman’s student leaders spoke to our second graders about what the food pantry does and how good it feels to give back to the community. We’re so grateful to Oakwood’s Kindness Captains and to everyone at the elementary school who helped in making this fundraiser and contribution such a success!

The pantry is open to anyone in need of non-perishable food items, every other Wednesday at the high school from 2:30-4:30pm. The dates of distribution for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year are March 13th and 27th, April 3rd and 17th, May 8th and 22nd, and June 5th.
