Before the holidays during Computer Science Week, WWHS students from Mrs. Savelli’s, Ms. Traina’s and Mr. Feraco’s classes helped our elementary students celebrate The Hour of Code. Over 100 million students worldwide participate in this event each year. Our students enrolled in computer science and cybersecurity courses at the high school were excited to bring their coding and technology knowledge to our district’s youngest students. Coding or programming is an interactive way to create step-by-step instructions to tell the computer what to do. Each day during the week of December 5th, students were introduced to coding and design activities that prompted creativity and new technology skills with help from our high school students. It is wonderful to see our students so engaged and enjoying coding in such an interactive and hands-on way.

Walt Whitman High School computer science and research students celebrated the Hour of Code with our district's youngest coders at Oakwood Primary Center.

Students at Birchwood paired up to build and program coding snails using Lego WeDo.

The Code-a-Pillar was a big hit at Countrywood.

Students found plenty of fun and interactive coding activities available to them at Code.org.

Students in Mrs. D'Elia's class at Maplewood enjoyed the STREAM room where they were engaged with binary candy cane coding, Dash the Robot snowball flight, and more!

District administrators, including Assistant to the Superintendent of Elementary Education, Dr. Gayle Steele, joined our high schoolers at Countrywood to celebrate the Hour of Code with puzzles, games and coding activities.

Thank you to our Walt Whitman High School students for spending the week celebrating the Hour of Code and guiding our youngest coders throughout the district!
