What are Title I funds?

South Huntington benefits from Title IA federal funds, which are federal educational funds distributed through state departments of education. Schools and districts are identified to receive these funds based solely on levels poverty (percentages of students benefitting from either free or reduced-priced lunch). Based on this criteria, all schools within the district are identified as Title I schools, hence, all students benefit directly or indirectly from these funds.

For the 2015-16 school year, South Huntington schools will provide Title I resources to support reading services at the following schools: Oakwood Primary School, Countrywood Primary School, Birchwood Intermediate School, Maplewood Intermediate School, Silas Wood Sixth Grade Center, Stimson Middle School and Walt Whitman High School.

The academic support program in each building provides identified, targeted students with additional instruction and services that are provided by a certified reading teacher as part of a regularly scheduled program. For students in K-8 buildings, teachers and administrators refer to the district developed Response to Intervention (RtI) plan. Students are identified based on multiple measures such as reading unit test scores, ELA assessment scores, daily classroom participation and performance, and/or other measures of performance. All remedial instruction matches the skill level of students to improve their achievement within the grade level ELA program. The reading teachers use alternate, research-based strategies to teach and reinforce reading skills and strategies, as well as writing, listening, speaking and critical thinking skills.
