Whitman Girls Basketball Claims First Time County Title
Congratulations to Walt Whitman’s Girls Varsity Basketball Team on winning their first county title in program history! On Saturday, February 25th, the team came from behind to defeat Northport and win the Suffolk County Large School Championship. To start the first quarter, the team was losing 11-0. The Wildcats turned it around in the second half, with Iris Hoffman hitting a three-pointer to give the team their first lead of the contest. The girls stayed ahead for the remainder of the game, winning 48 to 44. The team now has 20 wins and 3 losses, the most wins in a single season for the Wildcats.
With their win against Northport, Whitman advances to play the winner of the Massapequa/Baldwin game in the Long Island Class AA Championship/Southeast Regional Final at Farmingdale State on March 11th at 1 PM. Before then, the Wildcats are up against the winner of the Port Jefferson/Shoreham-Wading River game in the Suffolk overall final at Stony Brook's Island Federal Arena on March 4th at noon.
