Students Volunteer to Serve Seniors at 31st Annual Spring Fling

We were so happy to see everyone who joined us at Walt Whitman High School for the 31st Annual Spring Fling! The annual luncheon invited seniors from the South Huntington community to come to the high school for some dancing, raffles, lunch and a show, making for a fun Saturday afternoon!
Senior South Huntington community members had a blast as they headed to Whitman’s South Cafe for an afternoon out. Leadership students from the high school volunteered their time to serve our guests a delicious lunch provided by the South Huntington School Nutrition Services. It was a win-win: seniors had fun dancing and socializing with friends while our students racked up some important community service hours.
“It’s a way for our students to be able to connect with the community at large, to have some more civic leadership and civic engagement among our students and staff. And it’s to give back to those older residents that are a little more nostalgic. Maybe they went to high school here, maybe their kids went to Walt Whitman High School, and it gives them a chance to walk down memory lane and have a good dinner and a show while doing it,” said principal John Murphy.
Before guests arrived, students from ESGO, along with club advisor Kelsey Finnegan, transformed the South Cafeteria into a bright flower-filled venue that made it feel like spring was in the air. Everyone who attended enjoyed dancing to their favorite songs, eating lunch with friends, and even winning free raffles donated by local vendors. It was a wonderful afternoon out that culminated with musical performances from the high school production of Chicago. Attendees also got a free ticket to see the matinee performance that afternoon. Needless to say, all of our guests were impressed with the fun-filled event and the talents of our high school students!
