South Huntington Featured in NBC News School Lunch Taste Test
Here's the finished segment from NBC News that featured South Huntington, Walt Whitman, and several of our students as journalist Emily Lorsch explored new tastes and spicy trends for school lunches. Tyson Foods Chef Stephen Bell created a half dozen new recipes and whipped them up in Whitman's South Cafeteria kitchen with the help of our School Nutrition staff on September 4th. Students from Birchwood, Silas Wood, Stimson, and Whitman helped Emily taste test the new eats, including the Honey Chipotle Chicken Sandwich, Cheesy Enchilada Bake, and Saucy Spicy Chicken Drumstick with a Nashville Hot dipping sauce. Then it was "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" from our students on the dishes they would like to see served in any of our school cafeterias. The students’ palate thermometers ranged from “too hot” to “not hot enough,” and some kids who said they didn’t like spicy food were surprised to learn that they actually did! The segment aired nationwide on NBC News outlets on September 11th and 12th. Thanks to all the parents who allowed their children to take part in this fun experience!
