South Huntington Observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and all seven of our South Huntington schools have been participating in some way to raise awareness, raise money, and/or support those affected by breast cancer. Pink could be seen everywhere throughout the month, including in the stands and on the field during Whitman football’s Pink Out game on October 3rd.
At Oakwood and Countrywood Primary Centers, the staff has been wearing pink every Tuesday in October.
At Birchwood, Wednesday is the day for the staff to come dressed in pink. At Silas Wood, students, teachers, and staff put on the pink for a full day of showing their support on October 17th.
At Maplewood, the Student Council has been selling bracelets for $2. The money raised will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Stimson Middle School will be holding its second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at the school on Monday, October 27th at 3:15PM. Together, students and staff will walk around Stimson’s back fields in a show of unity, strength, and support to raise awareness and money for cancer research. The entrance fee is $5 and all proceeds will go to the Stand Up for Suzanne Foundation, which works closely with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Principal Michael Duggan said, “This important tradition allows us to honor and celebrate the courage of our South Huntington survivors as well as those who have been impacted by cancer. We encourage everyone to invite friends, family, and neighbors to join us in this meaningful event.” Those who are walking were given the opportunity to fill out a beautiful “I am walking for…” certificate to honor a special person in their lives. Everyone at Stimson is also encouraged to wear pink on the 27th.
Another school group raising money for the Stand Up for Suzanne Foundation is Walt Whitman High School’s Girls Leaders Organization (GLO). Their very fun and popular “flocking” fundraiser runs from October 22nd to 29th this year. Be on the lookout for a flock of pink lawn flamingos coming to a front yard near you! For seven nights, several teams of GLO members fan out around South Huntington. Each team gets a flock of around six to ten flamingos, and they covertly leave a flock on the front lawn of someone who has been anonymously nominated. There’s also a sign left on the lawn that says “Congratulations, you’ve been flocked!” That sign directs you to the Stand Up for Suzanne website which tells you what to do next. You can make a donation if you’d like, because there’s no obligation if you’re flocked, but then you can anonymously pick someone to get flocked next! Each night, flocks of flamingos mysteriously migrate to other lawns. There’s information on how to nominate someone for a flamingo flocking on the Stand Up for Suzanne website.
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign was established in 1985 by the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute. The pink ribbon, a symbol of hope and support, was introduced several years later.
Thanks to everyone in our schools for your participation in these activities! Whether through donations, walks, or wear-pink days, you make a meaningful difference in the fight against breast cancer. Your encouragement helps support research and treatment, provides resources for patients and their families, raises awareness for practices like early detection, and builds a compassionate community to offer comfort to those affected by this disease.
