South Huntington Hosts First Annual Family Wellness Expo

South Huntington recently held its first Family Wellness Expo. It was a special event to show our district families all the great help they can find right here in our neighborhood. Our educators know that when families are doing well, students do better in class.
Hosted by Walt Whitman High School on May 1st, the Expo brought together community organizations that help with job training, health care, housing help, food assistance, and all kinds of family support services. The event was organized, in part, by Melissa Smith, the district’s Project Excel Coordinator, who is also a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). As a social worker, she knows how important it is for people to have quick, easy, and safe access to the resources that can make a big difference in their lives, and she believes the school district provides that comfortable starting point for those who might otherwise be hesitant to reach out for assistance.
“It’s vital that we bridge the gap between school and community,” said Ms. Smith. “We should be working closely together so our students can find jobs, parents can get health insurance or access clinics, and everyone knows what is available. The need is very great. Even if you think you’re better off, there are organizations that may offer something you aren't aware of. It is always worth reaching out.”
In a diverse community like South Huntington, the district understands that language and accessibility can often be hurdles. To ensure every resident felt welcome, the Expo prioritized a safe, inclusive environment, including dual-language support, therapy animals to highlight the positive impact pets have on family well-being, and even meditation coaches from the Zen Den to help with social-emotional wellness. “Everybody needs support,” said Ms. Smith. “The support just looks different for everyone. We are willing to explore what type of support they need.”
To end the night, families headed to the athletic field for the SHEF Family Glow Run/Walk. SHEF is the South Huntington Educational Foundation, established in 1994, which provides additional funding and support for the district’s projects in arts, science, technology, and music, often supplementing areas where district budgeting cannot. With a suggested donation of $5 for each runner/walker, students of all ages and their families made their way around the athletic track several times carrying “glow sticks.” The money raised will go to provide scholarships for Walt Whitman High School graduating seniors.
We extend sincere thanks to the community organizations that turned out to offer their services: Cornell Cooperative Extension; Family Service League; South Huntington Public Library; Wilson Tech; NY LGBT Network; Island Better Hearing; Gellerman Orthodontics; Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center; Town of Huntington Youth Bureau; Northwell Health/Huntington Hospital; Tri CYA; Project Excel; Suffolk County Youth Bureau; New York Life; The Zen Den; and the United States Navy.
Thank you, also, to South Huntington Nutrition Services for the tasty, healthy, and fun food—including berry and blue smoothies—they served to all our guests.
The night was a huge success, and we can’t wait to see everyone again next year!
District social workers were at the event in addition to community vendors, there to share information and activities to encourage social-emotional learning.
Walt Whitman High School’s South Gymnasium was a beacon of play with bounce houses and a variety of games for guests to enjoy.
South Huntington School Nutrition Services served up samples of some common lunch items seen on the menu during the school day so families could get a taste of what our students enjoy regularly.
Families showed up ready to hit the track for the SHEF Family Glow Run/Walk to appropriately conclude the evening of health and wellness!
